Rudolfo Guglielmi, known as Rudolph Valentino, was the first movie star whose fame transcended film. During a time when silent movies were the most popular form of entertainment, he became an icon that even today people remember. He is widely considered one of the first movie stars and his popularity at that time proved to be a stepping stone for other silent movie stars such as Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks who also went on to become icons. With his Italian background and charisma that made women swoon, Valentino’s persona was perfectly suited for the screen. Rudolpho Guglielmi was born in Castellaneta in the province of Catanzaro in Calabria, Italy on October 23rd, 1896. His parents were poor farmers who struggled to support their family which included nine children six boys and three girls. As a young boy Rudolph often suffered from illness due to poverty and malnutrition which affected his growth so much that he remained small all his life. At age 14 he left home to find work to help support his family, after leaving home he took many different jobs including working as a hotel bellhop, an elevator operator, and even a haberdashery apprentice before moving to New York City where he found work as an assistant cook at Jolly Hotel in Manhattan. When World War I erupted he tried to enlist but was rejected due to his small size – measuring just under five feet tall with shoes -forcing
Film Career
After arriving in Hollywood in 1917, Valentino got his start in the movies as an extra in films directed by other people. He had to work odd jobs to pay the bills but eventually, he got his first break when he was cast in The Pleasure Buyers, a film by director Elmer Swain. Following his debut in the film industry, he began to appear in more films. He appeared in about 50 films in total; among them were The Delicious Little Devil (1919), The Young Rajah (1919), The Virginian (1919), The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921), and Blood and Sand (1922) for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
Death and Legacy
As his fame grew, Valentino’s health declined due to the constant travel and work schedule. During this time he developed a dependency on morphine which he began using to treat his severe tooth pain. In 1926 he married actress Natacha Rambova and the following year he died at the young age of 31. The cause of death was an infection caused by injecting himself with too much morphine. His death sent the media into a frenzy and many newspapers headlined the tragic news that the “Latin Lover” had died. He was buried in a black silk-lined coffin at the Hollywood Cemetery and more than 15,000 people lined the streets to pay their last respects. After his death, many people went to visit his home where he had lived with his wife and many of his personal effects were sold at auction.
Why is he still so famous today?

Valentino is still considered to be one of the first real movie stars who became famous for his looks and personality. Lessons for Entrepreneurs
With his humble beginnings, Valentino proves that even the poor and downtrodden can become rich and successful with enough determination and perseverance. He has inspired others to follow their dreams and to be confident in their abilities. Although he was small in stature and many people told him he couldn’t make it in the movies, he proved them wrong when he succeeded and became the most popular actor at the time. When it comes to business, Valentino is an example of a person who knows what he wants and isn’t afraid of taking risks. He was never afraid to take on new challenges and during his lifetime he tried many different careers such as boxing, acting, and designing. He also never let his age or health get in the way of his goals; for example, he married Rambova when he was 31 years old even though many people considered him to be too old for her.
